How much should I be charging / paying as a performer / venue?
Hey there, let’s talk about the elephant in the green room – money! 🐘💰
When we were designing GigBridge – this was one of the most vexed subjects we had to work through.
Given the vast number of variables in play, such as whether a performer is new, emerging, or a professional performer, along with how much time the entertainment opportunity is requested to perform and therefore considering what breaks might be provided.
When you combine this with any number of other factors, such as travel, or whether accommodation is required, or what other allowances are to be taken into consideration, it’s impossible, unreasonable, and unfair to suggest what is considered a reasonable charge / payment.
Common Pricing Arrangements 🎵
Like music genres, there’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to pricing! Here are some popular arrangements in Australia’s live music scene:
- Fixed fee performances (as reliable as your trusty guitar strap!)
- Door split arrangements (typically 70/30 or 80/20 – you do the math!)
- Percentage of bar sales (because thirsty audiences are happy audiences!)
- Base rate plus percentage (best of both worlds – like acoustic AND electric!)
- Weekend vs weekday rates are a legal requirement! (Because Friday night fever is real!)
Factors to Consider When Setting Your Price 🤔
Whether you’re a venue or performer, here’s what typically influences the final figure:
- How long you’ll be rocking out (duration).
- The trek to get there (travel time/costs).
- Who’s bringing the gear (equipment provided).
- Solo superstar or full band experience.
- Prime time or quiet night.
- Public holiday rates. (Because even rockstars deserve holiday loading!)
- Your experience level. (From garage band to stadium status)
Red Flags to Watch Out For! 🚩
Keep your eyes peeled for these common pitfalls:
- “We’re paying you through exposure!” (You can’t eat Instagram likes!)
- Super vague payment terms. (Clear as mud isn’t good enough!)
- Last-minute changes. (Nobody likes a surprise ending!)
- Unrealistic audience guarantees. (“We always get 500 people on Tuesday mornings!”)
The GigBridge Take 🎸
While we’re here to help you connect and book gigs easier than tuning a guitar with an electronic tuner, we don’t get involved in your pricing negotiations – that’s your time to shine! Just remember to:
- Get everything in writing. (Verbal agreements are like writing lyrics in the sand.)
- Be clear about payment terms and timing.
- Include cancellation policies. (Because life does happen when you least expect it!)
- Specify what gear is provided. (So there’s no surprises come show day!)
Remember: Your time, talent, and business operations have value – don’t be afraid to charge what you’re worth! 🌟
Need help getting those bookings sorted? That’s where we come in – but the price tag? That’s your song to sing! 🎤
